What is Myopia

Myopia is a condition where the eyeball grows rapidly, which typically begins to develop in childhood, currently affecting 1 in 3 children globally. This elongation increases nearsightedness (or shortsightedness), where individuals are able to see objects that are close, but have difficulty distinguishing things at a distance. If left untreated, not only does this result in a heavy prescription, but an increased risk of future eye health conditions due to the advanced stretching and thinning of the retina during childhood.

While there is no cure for myopia, there are a few treatments that can slow the progression.

Types of Myopia Control

Ortho-K | Ortho-K or Orthokeratology utilizes special rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight. These contacts gently mold the cornea to a proper shape reducing the rate of eye growth and allowing most patients to see throughout the day without additional vision correction.

Soft Multifocal Contact Lenses | These specialty soft contact lenses are worn during the day and correct refractive error, much like traditional contact lenses; however, the unique design of these lenses directs light to focus on the retina, effectively slowing down the rate of eye growth.

Atropine Eye Drops | Atropine eye drops relax the eyes’ focusing mechanisms. When these muscles are relaxed, the growth of the eyeball slows down. This method is ideal for children who are not yet ready for contacts. Vision correction, such as a pair of glasses, will still be needed throughout the day/evening.
